Oatmeal is Headline News

Wildflour’s Oatmeal Cookies make the news at Willamette Week. Wildflour Cookie Company (5400 NE 30th Ave. #103, 502-8738) A newcomer to the game, this sly contender is made even more extraordinary than it already is due to its elusiveness. Wildflour, together with Truffle Handcrafted Chocolates, recently began retail hours on Fridays and Saturdays, but is otherwise available by special order only at portlandtruffle.com. The modest-sized cookie is cakey, but this somehow does not sacrifice moistness and flavor. Quite the contrary: A thin, crisp coating gives way to a soft center that fills your mouth with buttery sweetness. Even the raisins seem better than average. No nuts.

I thought you might like to know a little about me and how I came to create the Wildflour Cookie Company.

I was raised in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. As most know, it rains a lot in the Northwest which allows for the perfect opportunity to stay indoors and bake. While watching Mom bake many pies, cobblers, cakes and cookies I became inspired. Then the day finally came at the ripe old age of eight . Mom began to start a batch of cookies when suddenly she turned to me, passed the bowl and put the spoon into my eager hands. With lots of excitement and imagination I was more than ready to bake. As the story goes I put a make shift chef hat on and began to carefully measure, sift and bake before an imaginary T.V. camera. Once the cookies were out of the oven the true test was yet to come. Each family member took a cookie to taste and of course the cookies were wildly successful. The sound of “Yum” and “delicious” with big smiles of appreciation had me hooked from then on. I still haven’t made it on T.V. but the cookies seem to be doing great!

After years of experimenting with different cookies on family and friends, I was able to create some of my own recipes. From there the word spread of my cookies and I began to receive lots of encouragement to start selling them. Starting a cookie business began to form in my thoughts but it was still a big leap. Then I remembered how they really could make people smile and with that in mind my decision was made.

How did I come up with the name? The person I owe a huge thanks to that gave me the last push to get the ball rolling and start the business, is Stephanie Liefeld of Portland Truffle. She was on a road trip and came up with the name, Wildflour Cookie Co. We now sell our truffle chocolates and cookies at our retail location in N.E. Portland, OR.

Wildflour Cookies are meant to be a special treat to yourself that you just close your eyes and sink your teeth into (then smile). I am a firm believer in leading an active lifestyle, but I don’t ever resist a good Cookie.

I wouldn’t be here today without the support and successes that have contributed to the rapid growth of Wildflour Cookies. I hope you will all continue to find enjoyment in my cookies and be a part of my rapidly growing cookie venture.
